| Some people
have concerns when they hear about Reiki that they want to have
answered before they feel comfortable exploring Reiki any further.
Many of the most common questions appear below. If you have
other concerns, please email me for consideration in adding
them to this list. |

|
| I have
never done anything like Reiki - Can I really learn this?
Reiki is a great place to begin. At it's heart,
Reiki is very simple. Once connected to the Reiki energy by
the Reiki Master/teacher, the student just have to have a
vague intention of the Reiki starting and it does.
Reiki is not really taught, it is transferred
from teacher to student, sort of like adding new software
to allow the student to get a new station on the radio. Because
of this, the student does not need to learn a lot of rules,
spend years practicing exercises, be able to meditate, or
have psychic abilities to be an effective Reiki practitioner.
Even if the student does not learn any advanced techniques,
just putting the hands on or above the area in pain is enough
to create healing. Just using the basic hand positions is
enough. Perception often increases with practice.
Reiki is not about sheer ability. It is about
having the compassion to take the time to use it to help the
people and situations the student cares about. Reiki works
to enhance divine order to resolve, so the practitioner doesn't
even have to know what is the right outcome. Most experienced
teacher's Reiki classes are designed to handle students of
a wide range of backgrounds and ability levels.
I and many other Reiki Master/Teachers offer
a reduced rate to repeat the class, so that even if not everything
makes sense the first time, students can repeat, and gain
knowledge and experience.
That being said, most students, even those
who have never done anything like Reiki before are pleasantly
surprised to find out how easy it is to do Reiki. They suddenly
discover that while they may or may not be able to see Aura's,
feeling and fixing them is quite easy.

I'm
a skeptic - Does any of this really work?
First,
some people NEED to believe there is nothing more to the world
than meets the eye. To entertain the idea that the world may
not be as clear cut as they have always believed can be as
terrifying for them as it can be for religious people to have
a crisis of faith. To force someone to change their belief
who is not ready to do so is impolite. Therefore if your purpose
is to disprove Reiki, please go somewhere else.
Second,
Reiki does not require belief, either from the practitioner
or the client. As part of proving Reiki to myself, and my
general service to the world I have done a great deal of Reiki
on nearly complete strangers, and I deliberately undersell
it. I'm on an airplane, at a party, at a unrelated conference
and some one asks me what I do for a living. I say "I
teach a form of holistic healing called Reiki" If they
show even a glimmer of curiosity I add "I'd be happy
to try it on you and see what you think. All you have to do
is be still for a moment" I ask if they have any problem
areas have them rate the discomfort on a scale of 1-10, do
2-5 minutes of Reiki and ask again. Usually the problem area
is dramatically improved, sometimes nothing happens, but I
have not noticed that belief or disbelief has anything to
do with it.
Third,
Skeptics are often the easiest people to teach. You show how
to do something once, and if they can do it too, they believe
you. My teaching style emphasizes student experimentation
and learning from results more than theory. There is a physicality
to the Reiki energy that the majority of Reiki students can
feel immediately. For some it is subtle at first, but it is
definitely there, and gets stronger with practice, and higher
levels of Reiki classes.
Fourth,
skeptics are often those who are not very psychically perceptive
themselves and so are blind to this aspect of the world. Oddly,
many of these people make some of the most powerful Reiki
people. They will complain "Im not feeling anything"
while the person they are working on is experiencing major
shifts and change. Those who are less psychically perceptive
have to play scientest and analyse results, rather than just
float in mystical experience. |

I've
done lots of things like this, why should I learn Reiki?
Many psychics
and energy healers get a feeling that they should take a Reiki
class, but are puzzled as to why. There are certainly other
healing arts out there, and some people are naturally strong
healers. Why also learn Reiki?
Reiki
is a different, clearer, more powerful way of connecting to
universal divine source. Once connected, the energy runs along
the same energy channels in the extended body that other forms
of energy healing and psychic perception do. Most find that
after taking a Reiki class, their healing and psychic abilities
increase by at least 50%, and are often easier to use.
Reiki
helps to protect the practitioner from picking up the negative
energy 'blahs' from their clients. Also, because Reiki works
with divine energy, it tends to bring positive resolution
to seemingly impossible situations. Reiki also tends to heal
the practitioner and flow energy to them even as they work
on another, so that after a session the practitioner and the
client both feel better than before. |

|
Will
a Reiki Session really help me?
The best
short answer is probably, try it and see. Like most of modern
medicine it usually works, but sometimes what works brilliantly
on one person may or may not work on another with almost identical
symptoms.
For a
longer answer, Reiki has been known to help every illness
known to mankind, and in many cases creates a dramatic improvement.
Because Reiki does not involve drugs, supplements or physical
manipulation. Reiki does not cause harm, or interfere with
medications or traditional treatment. Reiki also works on
the mental/emotional level allowing people to better adapt,
make decisions about and emotionally handle their illnesses
and their affect on friends and family members. Reiki also
works on the life experience level, helping increase positive
synchronicities to resolve the issue, and changing the type
of experiences that are drawn toward the people involved.
Most practitioners
focus almost exclusively on using Reiki to nourish the bodies
ability to heal itself, by using the hands palm down on the
clients body. I have found that In many cases sessions can
be made more effective by doing a certain amount of Reiki
upward to lift dense energy blocks out of the body. Distance
healing can also be helpful if there are past life or early
this life issues, or multiple people involved.
In my
own practice, most clients need 1-3 treatments to treat most
complaints, with the majority experiencing significant improvement
after a single treatment. Those with high stress lives, chronic
diseases, or recovering from something debilitating such as
stroke are encourage to opt for an initial series of treatments
of 1-2 per week followed by a maintenance series spaced further
apart, monthly or quarterly.
Most practitioners
charge roughly what massage costs in their area. Considering
the degree of relief that many experience, it is well worth
the experiment!
Many Reiki
master/teachers, including myself, offer a free or low cost
healing night, or provide some other venue for people wanting
to investigate Reiki to do so. Some are willing to be meet
with students before the class. If you have a group of interested
people, a Reiki Master/Teacher is likely to be more than willing
to come and give a talk and demonstration. |

Does
Reiki conflict with my religion?
One
of the fascinating things about Reiki is that it tends
to strengthen people's sense of spiritual connection,
regardless of what that connection is. I have had students
from the entire religious spectrum. In addition to lots
of 'ordinary' people, I have had many devoutly religious
people in my classes. I have had Catholic nuns, Buddhist
priests, church of religious science and Unity ministers.
I have had pagans, atheists and agnostics. I have had
many types of Christians, Hindus, Jews, Mormons and Muslims.
William Rand has written articles on "holding healing
services in your church", and "Was Jesus a Reiki
Master".
There
are of course some churches who are more judgmental about
anything that does not fit a particular definition of
'good', but they certainly are not universal. Reiki essentially
uses the same 'ki' principles as Judo and karate for health
purposes. Is Karate in the bible?
A
useful Judeo-Christian book on Reiki is Reiki
& You: Awakening the Healer within by Margaret
Lyles. This book traces the history of laying on hands
including bible references, and gives good basic information
on how to do Reiki.
I
have also been asked if Reiki is some kind of cult. I
once had 2 cult deprogrammers take my class, and I shyly
asked there opinion of Reiki. They laughed and said "Jess,
when you teach you constantly stress learning from your
own experience above reading what it says in any book,
or the voice of any authority. That's about as anti-cult
like as you can get"
It
is a big world with many points of view. In my classes
I do an opening prayer invoking the energy of 'God by
all the names we know and love' and try to conduct my
class with an awareness of diversity. Most students are
well used to filtering what they hear to fit their own
beliefs. Students with concerns in this area are welcome
to bring it to my attention.

Does
Reiki conflict with medical treatment?
Reiki
is a great complement to all kinds of medical treatment. This
includes conventional medicine (alleopathic) chiropractic,
homeopathic and herbal. Reiki does not introduce any substances
into the body, does not forcibly manipulate the skeletal structure,
and works largely by supporting the bodies ability to heal
itself. |

Has
Medical Research been done on Reiki?
An increasing
amount of research is being done on Reiki. reikimedresearch.com
has done a good job summarizing what research has been done
on Reiki. [I will try to add my own summary on this site at
some point] |
