Why Mt Kurama?

Mt Kurama is the mountain in Japan where Mikao Usui meditated for 21 days, and on the 21st day received the Reiki ability. While the vast majority of Japanese have never heard of Mikao Usui, many people travel to Mt. Kurama every year to ask the blessing of it's shrines. Mt. Kurama is about a 20 minute train ride from the old capital of Kyoto.

What is special about the energy of this mountain?

What is Kurama's Energy like?

My experience on Kurama

Mt Kurama is very special. It has a quality of energy that creeps up on you. A place whose energy becomes stronger as you work with it. There is a feeling of serenity and activity, somewhat like the energy of Karuna Reiki™.

I was on Mt. Kurama for a day in spring of 2001, and fell in love with the mountain and its energy. In Fall of 2001, I returned for a longer visit, and over the course of my stay, visited Mt Kurama 22 times as my Reiki pilgrimage. I would be happy to show you the mountain in detail if you would like to see it for yourself, see my Classes in amazing places for details.

From Reiki: The Healing Touch by William Rand

Mt. Kurama has wonderful energy! ... Mt Kurama is truly a "power spot" and the energy that flows is very uplifting, yet calming. There is a feeling of contentment and peace. We both (meaning William and Laurelle) were aware of many helpful spirits from whom we received inspiration and guidance.

What do we know about Usui's experience on Mt. Kurama?
From the Usui Memorial, as translated in William Rand's Reiki: The Healing Touch

One day he (Usui) went to Mt Kurama on a twenty-one day retreat to fast and meditate. At the end of this period he suddenly felt the great Reiki energy at the top of his head which led to the Reiki Healing System.

From Mikao Usui's question and answer session, as translated in Arjava Petter's "The Legacy of Dr Usui"

"I (Usui) was not initiated into this method by anyone in the universe. I also did not have to make any efforts to achieve supernormal healing powers (siddhis). While I fasted, I touched an intense energy and in a mysterious matter, I was inspired (I recieved the Reiki energy). As in a coincidence, it became clear to me that I had been given the spiritual art of healing. Although I am the founder of this method, I find it hard to explain all of this more precisely."

There is a story in Gakkai that Usui may have been enrolled in Buddhist school on Mt. Kurama as a child. There are plenty of buildings on Kurama where this school may have been located, as with many of the questions about the history of Reiki, further research is necessary (though may be difficult)

Mt Kurama is steep. Also notice size of the sacred Kami tree compared to my friend Dennis.
Kurama Village Noodle Shop: Did Usui eat here?

Circumstantial support of Takata's Origin Story

Mrs. Takata told a story of Dr Usui's experience receiving Reiki that we have been unable to verify through the Japanese material, or through historical methods. (see www.reiki.org) However, when on Mt Kurama, the story seemed unexpectedly believable.
Mt. Kurama

In Hawayo Takata's Story, Mrs. Takata says "He (Usui) decided to go to a mountain a few miles outside Kyoto to a mountain considered sacred by the monks" This accords well with the fact that Mt. Kurama is covered with shrines.

Hawayo story of the first three miracles of Reiki also becomes more believable once one has been to Mt. Kurama.
Steep enough to stub your toe

After Usui had received the Reiki energy (more on that story below), he is said to have excitedly run down the mountain and badly stubbed his toe. He grabbed his toe, and allowed Reiki to flow, and his toe was healed. This was the first Reiki miracle.

Mt Kurama is quite Steep! It is easy to imagine excitedly running down the mountain after 21 days of meditation, getting a little carried away, and at very least stubbing your toe.
Did Usui eat here?

Second, there is a village of Kurama. There is no 'inn' in the village now, but there are several eating establishments, one of which might well have been an inn during Dr. Usui's time. This village is in about the right place to have been a convenient stopping point for someone who had been meditating on the mountain to stop for breakfast.

Usui who?

Mikao Usui may have received the Reiki energy while meditating on Mt. Kurama, but his experience made no perceivable impact on the lore and legend of the mountain. No one there has ever heard of Mikao Usui. To them, he was just another pilgrim to this sacred place.

If you travel to Kurama, don't expect them to answer Reiki questions.

Mt Kurama Brochure
I was fascinated by the English language version of the brochure on Mt. Kurama that they gave out at the entrance. The site map of Kurama, the brochures inside text, and my speculations for its implications on the origin of Reiki all appear here.

Inside the brochure is an insert (Japanese on one side, english on the other) of the Prayer for Happiness to the Sonten of Mt. Kurama. Pictures of the Shrine of Sonten, and the English language version of the Sonten prayer (and my comments) appear here.

Other Kurama's you may encounter
Kurama Anime

I did a search on the Internet for Kurama and I found Japanese Anime..

Kurama is a popular character in the Yu Yu Hakusho series. There are a number of web sites dedicated to the Kurama character, but I saw no references to the mountain. And certainly none of them mention Reiki.

The Japanese Destroyer Kurama
"The destroyers Kurama and Kirisame and the supply ship Haman were dispatched under a new law that allows Japan's Self-Defense Forces to participate in a backup role in the U.S.-led war against terrorism." 11/09/01 LA Times
